Gaining the Victory over Giants: Lessons from Caleb's Faith

In life, we often encounter various giants—trials, temptations, and struggles—that seem insurmountable. As Christians, it is essential to remember that our God is greater than any giant we face. The story of Caleb in the book of Joshua offers valuable insights into how we can gain victory over the giants in our lives. Let's explore six key principles from Caleb's faith that can inspire and guide us in our own battles.

  1. Remember God's Promises (Joshua 14:6):

    Joshua 14:6
6 Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.

In the face of giants, it's easy to lose sight of God's promises and doubt His faithfulness. Caleb, however, remained steadfast because he remembered God's promise to give the land of Hebron to him and his descendants. Similarly, we must cling to God's promises found throughout His Word, including Psalm 34:17-18: "The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." Let us trust in God's unwavering faithfulness.

  2. View Circumstances as God Does (Joshua 14:7):

    Joshua 14:7
7 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.

Caleb saw the giants in the land of Hebron, just as the other spies did. However, his perspective was different because he saw the situation through God's eyes. Instead of focusing on the giants' might, he saw an opportunity for God to demonstrate His power. When facing our giants, let us remember Romans 8:31: "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?" With God on our side, no giant can stand in our way.

  3. Don't Follow the World (Joshua 14:8):

    Joshua 14:8
8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.

The world's response to giants may involve compromise, fear, or seeking worldly solutions. Caleb, though surrounded by others' negativity, chose not to follow the world's counsel. As Christians, we must stand firm in our faith and not conform to worldly ways. Romans 12:2 reminds us: "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

  4. Wholly Follow God (Joshua 14:9):

    Joshua 14:9
9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God.

Caleb's unwavering commitment to God set him apart. His loyalty and devotion were not half-hearted. In our battle against giants, we must wholly follow God, not relying on our strength but depending on His. Proverbs 3:5-6 offers this guidance: "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

  5. Know that You Have Purpose (Joshua 14:10-11):

    Joshua 14:10-11
11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.
12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.

Age did not deter Caleb from confronting the giants; he still had the desire to claim what God promised. Likewise, as long as we live, God has a purpose for each one of us. Psalm 138:8 assures us: "The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth forever: forsake not the works of thine own hands." No matter our age or circumstances, God's plan for us remains intact.

  6. Watch God Do Great Things (Joshua 14:12-15):

    Joshua 14:12-15
12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.
14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.
15 And the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

Caleb's faith and trust in God were rewarded when he received the land of Hebron as his inheritance. When we face our giants with faith, we, too, can witness God doing great things in our lives. Ephesians 3:20 encourages us with these words: "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us."

Just as Caleb gained victory over the giants of his time, we can overcome the giants in our lives by applying the same principles of faith and trust in God. Let us remember His promises, view circumstances from His perspective, resist the world's ways, wholly follow Him, understand our purpose, and eagerly anticipate watching God work wonders in our lives. With God on our side, no giant can withstand us, and we can live victoriously in Christ.
