Dealing with the "Winter Blues"

It’s that time of year again! The days are shorter, the weather is colder, and for many people, the winter blues have arrived. But as Christians, we don’t have to let this season bring us down. Here are three ways to help deal with the winter blues from a biblical perspective:

1. Praise God in All Circumstances – No matter how bleak things may seem at times, we can always turn our eyes to God and praise Him.

I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. —Psalm 34:1

We can thank Him for His faithfulness and goodness even when it doesn’t feel like anything is going right.

Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: —Psalm 103:1-2

This will help us stay focused on the positive and remember Who is ultimately in control.

2. Pray During Difficult Times – When those gloomy winter days come around, don’t forget the power of prayer.

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. —James 5:16

Talking with God about our struggles will help us find strength and courage to keep going. He answers prayers in ways that are far beyond our expectations (Isaiah 55:8-9), so trust Him to be your source of hope during these dark times.

3. Spend Time With Others – It’s easy to become isolated when we’re feeling down, but spending time with other believers can be a great way to lift our spirits.

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. —Hebrew 10:25

Even if it just involves coffee or a quick phone call, connecting with others will give us an opportunity to share our struggles and encourage one another through prayer (Ephesians 6:18).

Dealing with the winter blues doesn’t have to be a daunting task when we rely on God as our source of strength and comfort. So don’t forget these three tips—praise Him in all circumstances, pray during difficult times, and spend time with others—as you seek His guidance throughout this season!
