Update: Colorado Prostitution Decriminalization Bill Withdrawn — But the Fight Is Not Over

In a previous post, I warned about Colorado Senate Bill 26-097, which sought to decriminalize (effectively legalize) prostitution across the state. The bill would have removed criminal penalties for activities such as prostitution, solicitation, and patronizing a prostitute.

There has now been an important development.

According to recent reporting, the effort to pass the bill has been abandoned by its own sponsor after failing to gather enough legislative support. You can read the report here: 9News report on the bill being abandoned.

Rather than allowing the measure to proceed through committee and be voted down, the sponsor chose to pull the bill after it became clear it lacked the votes necessary to pass. In other words, the legislation was not defeated by a public vote — it was withdrawn. Read more on this here.

Reports indicate the sponsor acknowledged the bill did not have sufficient support to pass through the Senate Judiciary Committee and therefore requested that it effectively be shelved for the remainder of the legislative session.

Why This Matters

While the withdrawal of SB26-097 is encouraging, Christians should understand that this does not mean the issue is settled.

Legislation like this often follows a pattern:

  1. A controversial bill is introduced.

  2. If opposition is strong, it may be withdrawn before a vote.

  3. Later, a revised version reappears with different language, new framing, or incremental steps.

Next time the proposal may look different. The terminology may change. The arguments may be reframed in ways designed to make the policy sound compassionate or necessary.

But the underlying issue will remain the same.

For this reason, believers must remain vigilant.

A Call for Spiritual Vigilance

Scripture warns us to stay alert:

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”
— 1 Peter 5:8

Spiritual vigilance also requires preparation:

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
— Ephesians 6:11–12

The cultural and spiritual battles facing our society rarely end with one bill or one vote. Ideas that fail today are often reintroduced tomorrow in a different form.

What Christians Should Do

The withdrawal of SB26-097 shows something important: public engagement matters.

When citizens speak respectfully but firmly, legislators notice.

But our responsibility does not end when one bill disappears. As believers we must:

  • Stay informed about legislation affecting moral issues

  • Speak truth with grace and conviction

  • Pray for our leaders and our communities

  • Support those who are vulnerable and exploited

Above all, we must remain faithful to the call to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16) in a culture that is constantly shifting.

Final Thought

This particular bill has been withdrawn, but similar proposals will almost certainly return.

When they do, we must be ready again — spiritually prepared, informed, and willing to stand for truth.

Stay watchful. Stay prayerful. And do not grow weary in doing what is right.
